Take one ancient TAITO arcade game, convert it onto the Sega Saturn, and what have you got? Well back at the time, not a lot really. During the Saturn's life Treasure released some fantastic 2D Shoot-em-up's, all significantly better than this. Hold on though, whilst certainly not being worth £39.99 back in the 90's, viewed in a retro context, where you can now pick up a PAL copy for a couple of quid this game merits re-evaluation.

A 2D side scrolling shooter, Darius 2 looks very basic. The Mega CD could do better than this, and the Saturn, as we know could do breathtaking 2D.

Here the backgrounds are basic and crude, and worst still the PAL version suffers with awful borders, it's like looking at a game through a post box. But the game is fast, the shooting intense, and most importantly the game is addictive.

You'll find yourself coming back again and again for a quick blast on this, but there are other issues. The game is far too short, levels are samey, power up's on the ships unexciting. The biggest problem though is the number of continues, it makes the game far too easy.

Things don't sound all that promising for Darius 2, but if you enjoy this style of game then you should buy it, you honestly should.

Accept it for what it is, a dated shooter, that wasn't the best of it's genre even in its day. Don't pay more than a pound or two for it, and if possible get hold of the Jap version to get it full speed without borders. Buy it, enjoy it, but don't expect the world.

Breakdown

Gameplay:

7/10

A fun blast, you will get addicted.

Graphics:

4/10

Dated bland backgrounds, all levels look the same, 2D sprites are poor. The saturn can do so much better.

Sound:

4/10

Like the graphics, sound is true to the arcade original, which means they are quite poor.

Longetivety:

6/10

Game is too short, quite easy. Longevity is enhanced by that addictive 'just one more go' gameplay.

Originality:

2/10

The Darius games were not original when they were first released, let alone by the time the Saturn conversion was unveiled.

Overall:

 6/10
