When you keep a mutant Khourieat hidden in your village you have to expect something bad to happen. Like being attacked by “The Empire”… Right?
Well that’s something you will learn the hard way… In Panzer Dragoon Zwei.

Panzer Dragoon Zwei Start Screen

Making a sequel to a game that got so great ratings like Panzer Dragoon is never easy, people tend to expect the sequel to be better than the original title, well on Panzer Dragoon Zwei that happens.
The game system is pretty well similar to the first game, and the universe is of course the same.

Here you play the role of a young man who made friendship with a mutant Khourieat and together they will fight against the empire.
Flying in the torso of your dragon your job is to shoot all the enemies that show up in your screen, that if you want to stay alive.

The game works on a rail shooter system, this means you don’t get to freely control your character, the dragon will walk by himself trough the maps, you can though chose some optional routes in some parts of the levels and one route may be easier than the other but of course that the hardest one will give you more points.
Panzer Dragoon II Zwei Screen ShotThe dragon you ride will change its form along the game evolving into a bigger and stronger dragon.
At your disposal you have a laser gun that can shoot bursts of separate shots or can lock on several enemies at the same time and shoot them all at once, the strength of your shots will the depend on the strength of the dragoon so the more evolved the dragoon is the stronger your attack will be.

You can aim freely to every part of the screen and have a berserk attack that will shoot everything around you, to use this attack you have to fill a bar, do this by killing enemies.
Graphically Panzer Dragoon Zwei is very well conceived, the characters have a good detail and the maps are very well designed although most of the textures used on the maps are of low quality which is understandable considering the number of characters you have on screen sometimes.
Same can be said about the design, enemies and characters follow the same line that on Panzer Dragoon, everything is very detailed and pretty original.

Panzer Dragoon II Zwei ScreenshotOn options screen you can chose between Widescreen and Normal. Of course that on Widescreen everything looks a little better and if you have your Saturn connected to an LCD or HDTV I strongly recommend to opt for this.

The sound on Panzer Dragoon Zwei is as good as it was on Panzer Dragoon and maybe a little better, the background music of the levels is pretty epic and is very well suited for the epic battle you are fighting alongside the mutant dragoon the rest of the sounds like the enemies and guns is pretty normal and does its job. On the dialogues, the sound is also extremely good although you won’t understand anything that is being said, but that is because the games developers decided to create a new language to make the whole universe of the game a lot more credible.

Panzer Dragoon II Zwei Screen ShotIn longevity terms the game isn’t that big but you will definitely play it again once you finish it because all its action is pretty well addicting.

Remember that having a save game of Panzer Dragoon Zwei on Saturn can unlock several things on Panzer Dragoon Saga as well as Panzer Dragoon Saga saves can unlock some stuff on Panzer Dragoon Zwei.

Overall this is a great shooter, with a universe to which a lot of attention and detail was given. Technically everything is pretty decent except for the maps, where textures could have been of better quality, with a great soundtrack and an immersive story line it is a must have for every hardcore gamer or at least for every Saturn Gamer
